Question GND quistion BoSoZ

I finished my Balanced line stage, a year or so ago, and is now makeing an cheap Velleman, RIAA preamp, so that I could listen to our old Vinyl's LP.

My quistion is:

I just build a little PSU (15VDC) for my RIAA-stage, and would like to connect this RIAA/PSU it to one of the input's at my Balanced line stage, could this be done, without any problem's, I mean the GND of the RIAA, would then be connected to the GND of the Balanced line stage, but that should be just fine right ???

Connecting the grounds of two different components is a source of much experimentation. Are you using a normal coax cable to connect the two? The normal way to connect two components with a coax is to "lift" the ground at one end with a small ceramic capacitor. That is, wire the cable shield to ground at the source, and connect it to a capacitor to ground at the destination.

Alternately, you could install a switch that allows you to experiment. The switch could change between directly coupled and capacitor coupled cable shield.

There is also the matter of your chassis' ground. You might want to experiment with grounding the cable shield directly to the chassis, or isolating it from the chassis and grounding it at some point in your circuit (the star ground, for instance).

There's plenty of experimenting to do here. Start with the standard setup and go with whatever sounds best.

Regards,
jwb
