volume control pot

Hello all,
I'm building my first amplifier and I would like to have a volume control. I only want one control knob. I was wondering if it would be necessary to install a dual pot or if I could break the signal ground that is common to both channels? What value is needed? I've seen references to 47k ohm and 100k ohm pots. Which works best? Also who is a good source to purchase these pots from? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I suppose the pot value is dependent on the input impeadence.

You should also use an audio tap or get a logrithmic potentiometer. Power vs voltage is an exponential funtion.
