I bought a brand new Crest 2600 power amp...to power my dual sub setup...and the fan in this unit runs all the time...and it's kind of noisy ..my question is does this thing need to run continuetly?

Only when the amp is putting out power. Chassis size and heatsink are very expensive, that's why a fan is used. A fan can allow for 1/5th the size. Thermostats can be added, but they are also expensive, and home audio users generally object to a low speed fan as well. Crest makes some convection cooled amplifiers. They are of course larger and more expensive. My friend Tony has his amplifiers in the basement below his listening room. You could check out a Crown K2 if you got the dough. |

You could make a circuit that has a thermistor sensor, have a pot to adjust for desired temperature. Set a turn-on point that will be just slightly higher than the turn-off point relating to temperature. Op-amps or comparators are swell.
