Default motorola vs on semiconductor

In my batch of MJ15003 semiconductors I received one motorola.

The motorola has a hfe of 80 while the on range from 30-40.

I heard that motorola has been taken over by ON.

So would this be a very old motorola transistor?

I don't want to use these before I cleared this up:

Is it ok to use MJ15003's with hfes of between 30 and 40 together with MJ15004's with hfes of about 240 in the leach amplifier?

I once bought a batch of 21193/94's the 93 were MOT and the 94's were ON.

There was a heck of difference in the hfe of one brand over the other. If I remember the MOT's were 25 and the ON's were 100.

Measurement was done at Ic = 5amps.

Since then I make sure I get one brand... I now have over 100 pairs of the MJ21195/96 both from ON and they match up very well.

By the way that 15003 you have there looks hookey, either a fake or VERY old stock.

Hope this helps

The Mot looks OK to me. Assembled in week four of 1990.

Motorola got bored with making things like diodes, transistors,
op-amps, etc., so they split off that business in the form of
ON Semi. So an ON device of a given p/n should be essentially
identical to the same Motorola part, save for usual process changes
and "improvements.

Recently ON has been showing signs of boredom
with diodes, transistors, etc.

Brian,

I disagree... The MOT parts and the ON parts seem to have some real differences. The stock I got was from a direct distributor of ON (No middlemen).

I suspect there must have either been old stock/ wafers/ Dies/ substrate whatever they call it... from MOT. My guess would be they were remarked or relabelled MJ15024/25's (which coincidentally I have and measure in the 20-25 hfe range)... something I would not expect MOT to do but the numbers speak for themselves.

I know that they switched back and forth between the powerbase and the perforated emitter technologies (taken from Toshiba)... The Perfs had higher hFe than the powerbase devices used in the MJ15024/25. Toshiba used the perf emitter technology
in the famed 2sb554/2sd424 and thats what ON now uses for the 21193/4/5/6 series which has a much higher hfe number.

There is a difference, for real!
