It depends if the distortion is discernible or not.
I have used an amplifier test bed with a relay based speaker DC protector circuit for about 10 years and it certainly sounds fine to me.

Distortion in switches (relays) was known when Doug was a boy. It has rarely been a large problem, but sometimes jumps-up and bites us.

Nickel - Wikipedia

Nickel is somewhat ferromagnetic. Much more when combined with iron (not an alloy used in relays).

Whether ferromagnetic material is "unsuitable for audio" may depend how it is used?
