I'm glad I picked up a couple not to long ago and almost cleaned out Profusion. They measured quite tight Hfe spread.

Well, this is disappointing. I was hoping to use these in a future project. Perhaps its better to wait and see what options will show up when I'm ready.

Although, it looks like someday in the not so distant future DIY will consist of sending a schematic in and having a discrete IC printed for you(at a price no one can pay). Just add power & ground!

Since the big, rounded CRT TV sets were abandoned, a long list of great, cheap high-voltage transistors and other components have been gradually abandoned too. The rest have turned to SMD of course.
SMD has its pros and cons in comparison to through-hole ones. I don't see any other option, than adapt.
A good soldering station with a hot-air pencil and practice, is a must.

Actually, you will only have to "send" a block diagram to your IC printer, and most likely that will be in the near future and you'll be able to print displays too.
The DIY ICs might be much bigger, but functional at a low cost, eg a complete device could be made as a large flat chip up to a printer page -fully integration age with no discrete components whatsoever .

They are buried in the list.

Just IMHO I don't miss the MT200 packages.
One can get roughly 6 pcs of equivalent TO-3P devices for the same price as 4 pcs of MT200, inside it the silicon substrate is still attached onto a TO-3P metal base which in turn is attached to a larger MT200 base, paying ~2 €$Ł more for extra metal and plastic huh?

I feel too old myself, to work with smd-s. Few is OK, but soldering hudreds of them are out of question. My only way is to stock as much through hole devices as I can...

You would if you were in the business of repairing or restoring old (and good) amplifiers which used them, and had a reputation for doing the job right. That's who needs to be buying them up right now. New construction can always go to new packages or topologies.

Measuring hfe in the low current levels doesn't mean something for the high level current where these will be used.
