I'll post this for reference purposes - in case anyone has low volume and distortion. It's a long shot but...
Check the impedance switch hasn't had a knock and poked through the case separating the two halves of the switch. It was sheer luck I found this on mine as it wasn't totally separated and very hard to spot. A lot of head scratching prior to that
To fix - just put it back together and squeeze up the tabs again.
