Krell KSA 50 PCB

Al,

Will have to wait till next week for the group order to start up due to family stuff... Will contact you then. I was just kidding you about another board🙂 . I would rather see you do the GG stuff first as thats a VERY worthwhile project. Just had a few minuites this morning to catch up here.....

Mark,

I don't want to deviate of this thread’s topic, but since you mentioned the GG, could you tell me what are you guys planning to do about it. I made a preliminary version of a board but did not pursue it because I realized it would not be fair to Bruce if we allow people that have not purchased the book to have access to the schematic. We could, of course, consult him first and add to the cost of each board $1 or so as royalties to be paid to him. Have you thought about that? Should we start a thread to discuss it?

CCSS schematic

Hi All,

You should be able to see the simple schematic of the dual CCS for the front end of the amp...

I assembled mine on a piece of perfboard, approx 1"x1".

I am working on a very small pcb, I will probably get some made by express PCB, I think I can squeeze 8 maybe 10 on one of their cheapest boards and then get a total of 24-30 made for about $60...

Stuart

....and anyway whats a GG, who's Bruce, and do I need to know?

Do you want to do a Wiki on your CCS proto? I'd like 20 or so.

I agree with Grimberg that we should start a new thread for the GG. I have one of Bruce's pre-amps and it's a great piece of kit. I believe that Audio Reality is now out of print so perhaps it is a good time to start the ball rolling on this project and if we can get Bruce's blessing then all well and good.

Cheers,

Stuart,

The Grounded Grid Line Stage (GG) is the brainchild of Bruce Rozenblit, an engineer who has published two books and designed some very interesting tube-based gear. He owns Transcendent Sound Inc (http://www.transcendentsound.com) and sells his designs in the form of kit or fully assembled. Some of those commercial products are presented in his book Audio Reality, which is unfortunately out of print. Mark built the GG from the book and after he presented it in another thread, I built it too. It is VERY impressive and compares favorably to the Audible Illusions Modulus 3A, considered by many as a high-end classic.

Nice board. I didn't even attempt to use those large dale resistors, too big for the tiny layout. Nice touch on how you fit them in.

What will your config be? Add it to the build wiki appendix- I think its ok to put "in progress" designs in if you so indicate.

CCS r2...

...is 100k, this gives a zener current of approx. ~0.25ma with rails of 25v, upto ~2ma with 110v rails, in either case within the power limits of the resistor and zeners...and enough to ensure the base current for the transistors is trivially available.

The CCS are set to approx. 3ma, the relatively high gain transistors pull very little base current, eg with a hfe of 100 (out of spec low), the base current is still only 30uA, so no big deal. The higher the hfe the less load on the voltage source.

The caps just make the zeners a little quieter...

I'll get prices for the CCS pcb, at this point I don't know if it is cost effective because they are so little...but we'll see...

pcb for CCSS

here's what I've done so far...

I can trivially panelize this and get 72 made for $135, obviously the more I do the cheaper it gets, but it's hard to believe we collectively have a need for this many, if someone wants to do a wiki and prove me wrong I'll be happy to get them made...

I am using the expresspcb software, and the prices I'm quoting are based on their standard board service...

If anyone wants to investigate some other PCB house, I can deliver what files I have from the expresspcb software.
