Surround: 5.1 or 7.1 or 9.1 ?

Is it worth bothering with the added channels ?

Just changed my Surround receiver to a fancy one that goes up to 9.1 so hooked up some temporary speakers to 7.1. Re-calibrated the speaker set up and have to listen hard to hear any difference, if any. To go to 9.1 would mean investing in more speakers and mayhem installing all that.

Have researched and tested some Blu-rays that supposedly have good soundtracks, but I am still unconvinced there is any improvement over 5.1

Any thoughts guys ?
