Default Transistor differences due to manufacturing?

What is it in the manufacturing process of a batch of transistors that causes differences in gain?

they are laying a thickness of atoms on to a previous layer of atoms.

Different thicknesses will change the parameters. different contaminants will change the parameters.

It is the controlling of thickness and contamination that limits the devices.
