Default Advances in semiconductor technology

I have been trying to learn about amplifier design for a bit and have been lurking in this forum on my free time. I started thinking about looking for new developments in chip technologies as i am interested in a design around a completely new chip with less drawbacks allowing for a more simplistic design.

This is my first post, so please be gentle...

I thought I would ask for advice from the community before I follow this path too far along - is this worthwhile? Can we expect any developments which would still enhance the audio performance of mosfets jfets and what have you? Or has everything been done and new developments are relevant in for other applications like say cmos transistors for video which has different requirements?

As potential conversation startes and examples of new developments I would like to add two links:

a) a new technology with low temperature drift
IEEE Xplore - Power mos current sensefet temperature drift study and improvement by the help of 3D simulations

b) development of gallium-nitrade chips (please ignore the class d application)
IEEE Xplore - Is it the end of the road for silicon in power conversion?
