It is probably going to be difficult to beat that 
: a push-pull with less than two transistors being a kind of an oxymoron.
Performances are not great, but it actually works: I have tested it, with slightly different components: a 2SC1983 for Q1, and a IRF520 for M1.
I have also tried with a TIP122 darlington instead of M1 (and no R5): it also works.
