Pioneer is using ICEpower Class D amplifier technology
The Pioneer VSX-1020-K listed at $549 on Pioneer's website can be found for less than $300 on Amazon.
For the price, it is an amazing receiver, and the sound quality is right up there.
To find out more about Pioneer's Direct Energy amplification:
Personally, I really like the sound, performance quality and reliability of Pioneer. I still have a Pioneer SX-1250 from 1974 receiver driving the left and right main bass Pioneer HPM-150 speakers from 1976. I'm using bi-amp on those.
Wiki on ICEpower:
The class D3 amplifier in the Pioneer Elite SC-65 apparently uses little or no feedback at all, with great linearity and efficiency. Music to my ears!
Now from a DIY technical perspective, I'd like to understand more what this D3 class amplifier is all about?

I'm going to be turning the 7 channel amplifier pcb + heatsink into a new amplifier for my HT system so I'll get the 'sound' but not all the benefits of the rest of the circuitry. I could easily buy a new one I suppose, but then where's the fun in that ? - besides, if I do buy one it will be their new Class D receiver. I saw one at The Future Shop. I think Class D is the ideal approach for home theatre where it's necessary to put a lot of power into a relatively small space. It would be interesting to hear it.
To find out more about their D3 design it would be nice to have access to a Service Manual. Looking at the design of their Class AB amp I can say that I have a great deal of respect for their design talent.
