Which NAIM clone

Hi,

I am fairly new to diy audio and have recently finished a headphone amplifiers kit I bought off ebay. Its not bad at all and has given me the confidence to try something a bit bigger. So, thought I would have a go at one of those NAIM clone amplifier kits, but not sure what the best one is. It appears that there are 2 available on ebay. I think one is based on the NCC200 which has to be soldered and the other has Sanken amp chips, already built. I know there are lots of forums regarding, but they are are fairly old. Anyone tried them?

Thanks.

I haven't try any of the above mentioned kits, but the Sanken chips have a good reputation for sounding good (if these are original Sanken's).

Go to pinkfish media join the HackerNap group buy in the diy section, a very well researched and tweaked Ncc200 variant.

If you are after cheap, that's what the Ebay kits are, so bear in mind that at the cost of the kits supposed to feature expensive Sanken 200W output semis, you won't be getting genuine parts. Samples I have seen are good looking fakes, but they sure don't deliver 70W/8R with low distortion or sound great. Mine burnt at from 20-35W 4R output level. Thats not bad in itself but the SQ is poor and none of that is what you bargain for.

I'd think 10s of thousands of DIYs have tried clone kits but the vast majority will have gone the Epay way. Buy the type with more likely genuine 2SC5200/A1493 instead or substitute your own genuine Sanken parts and get satisfaction - if you also do the research and locate a genuine schematic. The schematic and boards supplied are to a generalised diagram, unlike any specific Naim model. They will work well enough but not sound particularly special. You will have a simple class AB amplifier and have to go through tweaking it, like any cheap kit.

There is a long thread here which already covers your query - many times over. It discusses parts, errors and newb problems these kits and the alternatives which, though vastly more expensive, are more certain ways to get high-end like, if not Naim sound, with basically the same circuit.

As the previous post suggests, there are several UK forums dedicated largely to just Naim tweaks and mod fun. Enjoy!
