Rotel RX-850A Tone Control
I have a Rotel RX-850A amp which i think has faulty Tone Control.
Adjustment of Bass and Treble pots make very little difference to overall sound, both through speakers an headphones. Tone In Switch seems to work, because when switched off, adjustment of pots make no difference at all (as expected). Balance Pot is working ok. Any help appreciated. |

I have an old Rotel 820 and the tone controls on that are similar. The range is very little and just at the frequency extremes.
If the 850 is similar then it won't be faulty. The tone stages in the 820 are just a passive network rather than active.

Mooly you are quite right there....
I had the amp connected to a pair of cheap stuff Pioneer 3 way bookshelves(they are now in the bin...). Connected my Mission 701s (freq. response 58-20k Hz) and the difference is like day & night. Had a look at the Rotel RX-850A manual, and Bass boost is only +3.5dB @ 100Hz, Treble +3.5dB @10kHz. Interestly, my 15 year older Technics SA-104 is +10dB @ 50 Hz & 20kHz. Thanks for prompting a resolution. |
