How would this work?.... im not exactly sure on how to calculate when the last 4 relays are open ..?

64 steps (volume controll) but some will give the same damping not a problem though since i will use a mcu to controll them

I'd use a spreadsheet to simulate it all. You could play with values for hours.
I'd put one leg of each relay to ground, make the wiring easier.
This looks like an unusual arrangement. Aren't there more conventional ways to do the same thing?

Try a Digital Pot!! BOth analog Devices and dallas semiconductor(now maxim IC) ave simple digital pots that have a simple up down interface.

Search this site. I've seen threads about this topic. Search for volume control AND relay.
I believe there was one arrangement used in a Pass design. Also look for R-2R network - based designs.
