Default Velleman K4020 dual mono power amplifier

Hi there all

My name is James and im new to DIYaudio, i thought id share my first attempt at a kit amplifier on this great forum

I'm a couple newbie when it comes to building audio but have a fair knowledge in hi-end hi-fi (my brother is a buff, runs a pair of Tannoy SR840 monoblocks and Tannoy definition D700 main speakers) in his main system.

I'm an computer aided electrical engineer by day and did a bit of electronics when i was younger.....about 18 years ago.

I decided after seeing all the el-cheapo fleabay amplifier kits to have a go at making my own quad/naim/le monstre clone with a huge power supply, (63v, 15,000mf caps are so cheap on fleabay, ive got 8 now!!!), i let my bro know about my idea and he said you can finish my Velleman K4020 kit i bought 12 years ago first, 2 days later i was the proud owner of an amplifier case, 2 half finished PCB boards, 2 finished power meter boards and a box of bits.

The kit was complete apart from some transistor shims, and a few reservoir caps which i picked up for cheap on the 'bay.

Over the last couple of weeks i have put the amp back together, and to the shock of my brother (and myself!!!) the amp worked first time, apart from a bit of magic smoke from a resistor due to a solder short on one the power meter boards, It even sounds really good and will be plumbed into my home cinema system to drive my main speakers when i get chance.

I'm going to have a go shortly at a none' kit amplifier maybe using the boards off ebay and my own design case and power supply, ive robbed a 3U rack from work so im part way there.

I have all the Velleman diagrams, parts lists and board layouts for the amplifier and power meter circuits if anyone would like scans, (if velleman/board rules dont mind) and my kit was the last revision with all the final modifications.

Thanks for reading
James
