Good evening to all,
a few months ago I sold my Musical Fidelity X-A1 that I bought used a few months before ... the person I sold it a few days later told me that my youth sells at some point the music has ceased to be reproduced and the amp started to fry. Of course I have given back money to the buyer and I did return the amp. Now if you turn on it, and there is nothing plugged in, makes a sound like frying and feels (I opened the lid) it stinks Someone would know what could be the problem... Thanks Davide P.S. it may serve you I'm ready to take pictures ... |

From your photos it's pretty obvious that the four diodes arrowed have bitten the dust.
In such an old amp, the question has to be how much other damage is there ? MF amps are prone to cooking. I would start by replacing all the big capacitors, all the rectifier diodes and then check the output transistors. |

That amp does not appear that "old", at least to me. If it is a problem design, I would stick a gainclone in that chassis.

I've certainly repaired amps by substituting amplifier modules for blown amps.
This does nothing to preserve the original character of the amp though if you are trying to restore one. Sometimes your substitution could be better than the original. MF do have their own following though and are highly regarded amongst that fraternity. |

Some amps are timeless and MF certainly look modern. However, most MF amps are quite small and the electolytic capacitors age (or are cooked) . In this case I would suspect that the caps have dried out causing the diodes to fail. I would check the output transistors though just in case something else has caused the diodes to blow. |
