See we're all decent chaps and just enjoy a bit of technobanter.
If we didn't like to discuss anything then we'd all just buy a copy of Douglas Self's excellent book on Power amps and have all the answers.
Or am I opening up another can of worms here?

I don't think his book is that excellent at all. I would refer to it as amplifiers for dummies.

I would argue that there are a lot of pretty smart designers around on this forum that Doug Self could learn a lot from.

I got more from both Cordell and Jones.

Reading Self, just keep nitpicking petty
nuances I disagree with. He seems very
much a one trick pony. Nothing outside
the box to be learned here...

Not seen any of Cordell's work so could'nt comment.

Default Can of worms

I think you need to consider the changes at every level since 20 years ago with Self's first edition. We now have individual capacity to investigate electronics in ways that once eluded even professionals.

Cordell writes with a recent, forum driven agenda that naturally agrees with his followers here whist Self is apparently addressing small scale audio manufacturers' needs that had to be met with the greatest economy.

They are bound to appeal differently by content and value to DIYs who will prefer things served up in their own familiar terms. Both authors use "one-trick" topologies of necessity and I don't think either book attempts to delve into theory or analysis to meet high level interests.

Bob does, however, offer us the benefit of simulation guidance and models to engage in the modern design process as DIYs now aspire.

Of this list: Cordell, Self, JLH, Horowitz, ARRL, I prefer the JLH for the way it presents the design choices and information and explains why things are doen this way or that.

A second book dealing only with Audio Frequency Amplifiers would have been justified.

Ken, could you explain what your mod is doing? I'm having a hard time seeing it as anything but a complicated Class B stage.
