Is a "wire with gain" a phylosophy to your liking? Then you may like this idea too.
I'm thinking of a pre-amp that acts as an analogous effects processor which can be set to also be a wire with gain. The idea here is to create a number of unity gain tube stages that are tailored to exploit the specific colouring behaviour, the less feedback the better as feedback is the mechanism to get it closer to a wire with gain. Then, with a rotary button for example, a specific stage could be selected just to add that nice bit of tube color to the sound. From here on, you could actually discuss the differences between tubes sound quality wise. The ideas are endless. As long as the (stereo) module has an approximate gain of 1. Then we can let the power amp just be that wire with gain

Have you looked at the Tube Clipper from Elektor, October 2001?
