MArantz SR 4120 AM/FM receiver isn't holding station presets when powered completely off for a few days.
The unit is capable of being put in a standby mode with the remote control and then powered up to use and then put back into the standby mode when not used. The owner is powering the unit completely off via the power button on the front of the unit when he is done using it instead of putting it in the standby mode with the remote control. My question is ...is it normal for the unit to loose AM/FM station presets when powered 100% off for a few days or does the unit have a problem? Isn't the normal mode of operation for the units made in the last 5 or 6 yrs to be parked in the standby mode when not used so they retain settings? |

What does the manual say? Some items lose settings when switched off, some have a memory-retention battery (which might have failed), and some use non-volatile memory.

Look for battery or "super cap" on tuner or display controller board. Super caps are large (.047 Farad or higher - F not uF or mF or nF or pf and 4 to 5.5 volts (usually) about half an inch (1.2 cm) tall and 0.5 to 1.5 inches (1.2 to 4 cm) in diameter. Information should be in manual. YMMV

Was able to download a manual off the internet. It says that upon power loss it can retain presets up to a week. Will try to take a look see. Just wondered if anyone knew for sure.

"Up to a week" probably means either a supercapacitor or a rechargeable NiCd battery.

Try C901 0.1 F 5.5 volt "gold cap" (notation on main board in manual). If searching for parts, often called super caps.
