It's there to prevent the body of the pot. from rotating in the chassis, it does require a hole in the chassis though. If you have no hole just break it off with a pair of pliers, I do it all of the time.

If you drill a hole inside the panel to seat this tab, it will keep the pot from turning inside the case if someone forces it beyond the stop.
Otherwise, file/cut it away... |

One normaly drills a little hole the nub fits into, this prevents the pot from turning with the pot.
