Any opinions as to the proper adjustment of the VI limiters in a SON? From what I gather there was no procedure published by GAS. I know DJK touched on it a while back maybe DJK can elaborate now. I'm going to see James B. on the 19th but getting info out of him is a touchy subject, we'll see.

Met the man years ago in St Louis. Got to talking about the ampzilla and got some info out of him until he asked if I had an engineering degree. I don't thus the talk ended.

I met him a couple of months ago and asked about biasing the SUMO NINE, all was good until he found out my distortion analyzer didn't have a balanced input. So I'm going to pick up my newly cal'd Sound Technology analyzer up from him next week. Now I can get the info I'm after and I'll ask about the SON too. I was hoping DJK would chime in on this thread as he seemed to know what's going on with the limiters. It probably doesn't hurt that my friend whom I going with has know him for 35 years or so. We'll see.

Craig,
I'm sure Dennis(DJK) knows how to adjust the limiters. I'm thinking that he went thru this years ago with me. I'm going to make a guess here so don't hold me to it. I'm going to say to put the amp on a load and bring it up close to clipping and adjust both sides so they will clip at the same time and then go full power and adjust as necessary to maintain that they clip at the same time. If my memory is correct they should be adjusted so that they limit at or just above rated output. How about Mike Bettinger? |

I asked Mike but he said there was never anything published from GAS and he is not a believer in VI limiters, at least in the SON and never bothered to figure it out. Your procedure seems correct but what load? I think Dennis alluded to 2 Ohms. As far as James' attitude goes it has mellowed quite a bit lately.

If it were me I would use a 4 ohm load. I cannot remember if it is stable at two ohms or not. If built with better drivers and outputs I'd feel safe at two ohms.

I removed the protection circuit from my SoA. The SoA is rated at 250 wpc @ 2 ohms.
