Default AKAI AM-U1

Hi there

I purchased the above amp second hand to tie me over for a couple of months before I move countries. This is the first amp I have ever owned. The lady who sold them to me also sold me some Sony Hi Fi speakers to go with it.

The model no of the speakers are SS-CCP500 and they have a rated impedence of 6ohms. The amp says 4-16 ohms.

When I first started using this about 2 weeks ago there was great sound out of it. Now it sounds terrible if it is turned up, like a shakey kind of sound. It is possible that my friend may have turned up the bass and treble to the last. I take it that the speakers have been damaged. Is this amp too powerful for these speakers? Is there anything that can be done to rectify this issue.

Also I am now considering purchasing a set of 50W Acoustic Solution speakers from Argos.

Any help greatly appreciated!

May not be an overload issue, since output power is rated 25W@1kHz per channel, 0.3% THD.

Do a detailed inspection in the power supply capacitors´ pins. Once mine got a broken leg due to oxidation. And it sounded like yours. After replacing all the big capacitors in both supplies, it worked very well.

Replacing the big capacitors is only 10% of the job and sorry to say its a very childish approach ....

In an amplifier of this age all capacitors need to be replaced ( and all means all ) and also that is a simple given fact

replacing one that is faulty means that the next one will fail in 15 days or so ...

here is some info in a can vintage amplifier repair/upgrade manual

Thank you very much for the "childish"!
Yes, of course, all capacitors must be replaced!
Thank you again!

Erukus, read carefully that sakis' guide to restore an old, vintage amplifier.
It is a complete guide to get your amp up and running.
