Maybe you could tell us which issue of Electronics World the article will be in?
A folded cascode models as a single stage and adding a follower you have a two stage amplifier, close to a straight wire with gain, I suppose.
Nelson Pass, I believe, has used this approach in some of his designs.

I am not quite sure what a transimpedance stage is. Perhaps a short explanation on this might be in order since my Horrowitz and Hill is not avaible for now.
