Something i feel this section is lacking, is a good list of good transistors for use in amplifier output stages.
I begin with a few i think are decently cheap and still pretty good: 2N3716/2N3792 (assuming these are still made) 2N3772 2N3773 TIP35/36C BD911/912 |

NJW0302;0281 are barely more than usd $2. each, in USA
Extraordinary PNP-NPN match & gain linearity to 2.5 amp. pair them up, & resultant amp has enough power to blow up your speakers 3X Doug |

I have had very good service from irfp240/9240.
Despite being switching transistors they produce a very good sound.

I have tried BD911/912...did not sound great.Better to use MJ15034 if you can still find them. There is the all time favourite 2SC5200 and the current version made by ON semiconductor. |

There's the old MJ15003/4 and MJ15024/5. Still available, still usable.
MJ(L) 21193/4 for something a bit more modern. Then the modern Onsemi transistors such as the 3281/1302 variants. Fairchild have their own 2SA1943/2SC5200 clones in several packages. ST also have the same. |

I barely dare to buy anything else than BD911/912, TIP35/36C, 2N2955/3055 and similar due to all the fakery around the ones mentioned.
I agree on the IRFP240-250 beeing a decent audio output transistor, im using the 500V version IRFP450 with good success and good sound. |
