Question What happened ..???

Hi All

I found, and dug out this old Midi from the early 80s from the loft. It was covered in dust everywhere. I cleaned it up, hooked up to speakers and powered on. It was playing, but only one channel. The other channel was dead.

I thought maybe it need some switch cleaner on the volumne pot. I left it on with the volume down (the set was on all the time with just volume down), and one the second day, I put the volume up, it was the same, no sound from one channel. .... the third day same.. fourth day same.. but on fifth day, when I put the volume up, the both channel was working. It is all normal, and sounds great.

It's been working perfect for now for a few days - almost a week. What was wrong and what has brought this set back to working OK?

The midi is JVC DR-E31LBK and it had 5 graphic equaliser including balance and surround sound button as well. Hooked up to a 70s vintage huge Mordaunt Short MS400, it sounds amazingly good.

TIA.

Old gear often has aged caps (lost their initial capacitance and/or their impedance increased by decades) that get a bit reformed during a few days (or hours) on the line. Could be your case here.

If you want to keep the JVC running at its best, it's anyway a good idea to at least change the power supply caps (ideally all electrolytics).

Intermitent balance pot maybe or relays in speaker outputs. Something "mechanical" like that is the most likely problem.
