Hello there,
I am a newbie. I've just got hold of an old Technics SU-8080, and I have a slight problem. When I switch the input selector to Phono 1 or Phono 2 with nothing plugged into the phono sockets at the back, I get a loud, pulsing signal. I don't have a turntable yet, so I plugged my tape deck into the phono sockets. Merely switching the deck on stops the signal. Tape playback through phono is fine, apart from the distortion you would expect. What's going on? It seems as though this signal won't cause me a problem, but it's worrying. Does anyone have an explanation? Many thanks. All the best, Richard Christian |

This is normal.
You hear an empty capacitor get current to load. It is because of the design. When something attached the cap gets loaded. And you hear nothing.
