Default LDR volume control alternative

There has been some talk here about using light dependent resistors for volume control and maybe there are some technical arguments against that. I found this circuit which might be an alternative:

cmos switches can generate distortion.

But can they beat LDRs in distortion? Some very high end equipment is built around cmos switches. As usual everything depends on implementation.

Don't know how the distortions compare.
I think I read some stuff somewhere that if cmos supply is highish voltage and switch source impedence low and switch load impedence is high then lowish distortion can be had.
Analog devices had some very low distortion switches SSM2404 | Quad Audio Switch | Analog Switches | Switches/Multiplexers | Analog Devices
There are other high quality volume controler ics available.
