If you have a good DIY skill, DIY route is way better.

Can you source a used amp? Vintage amps have good quality transformer. This transformer is usually the most expensive part of a DIY amp and the used amp is usually cheap.

But good quality circuit per dollar is only available in DIY. So you can use this DIY circuit to replace the original commercial circuit in the used amp.

Refurbishing the look of the old amp will be part of a DIY activity.

For any commercial circuit used by the old amp, you can find similar DIY circuit so you can upgrade the old amp using the original PCB. Of course, some commercial amps such as NAD have different topology that you may not be able to find similarity easily. But if your DIY skill is good enough, nothing you cannot do. But a bit electronics knowledge is required.

Remote control is one feature that is useful but not easy to DIY. Think about having this control in the preamp. But I remind you good quality commercial preamp is too expensive.
