Default Small area for trafo for my SS amp suggestions please?

Basically with my planned build I will have 170mm wide 60mm high and 250mm long absoultly max sizes. I would like a 1000VA traffo and I have found some but they are too small does anyone know of anywhere to get low profile high power traffos?

Thanks
Boscoe

Junk shop, inside an used amp or broken amp, just ask a junk shop seller of what you need, and may they will ready with your request for a week. I usually do that for special items. Explain carefully about what you need, because most of them are not an expert.

I looked , EI or toriod ... no way to get that much (1000VA) in under 75mm. Hammond has a 48-0-48Vac at 500VA , Hammond Mfg. - Toroid Power Transformer - (182 Series) Dimension "I" (2.21" =56mm). Special order , I have seen some low profile (under 50mm)trafo's in pro audio single space (1U) rack mount equipment. Never anything close to 1KVA. I fear a SMPS power supply would be the only thing that could pump that much juice in that space. My standard trafo @1KVA/53-0-53Vac is 85 X 200mm and weighs 16lbs.

RS components do a a 1KVA one that is 70mm high and 160mm in diameter if only theres one just a bit wider and a bit lower. I want to build a goldmund clone monoblock so i didn't really want to go for SMPS.

Thanks for the advice though!

Hi Boscoe
Try airlink transformer's. They will build whatever you want as long as it is viable.

"goldmund clone monoblock" ??? #1 ... you would only need 500VA for a monoblock of that design. #2 . Don't build the clone on this forum or the ebay ones .. design your own. Both goldmund clones I know of are flawed and poorly designed. (AC on PCB - infantile voltage doubler / cap multiplier , no bias trimmer , no current sharing resistors). The ones I saw already built had overheating drivers and they were already modifying the boards to implement the required above refinements.

PS - Dr. Bora's "sigma" is a much better goldmund clone (below) cascode it to use the FET's and you would have a better , more stable , proven design.

Okay thanks but I was planning on powering both amps with one PSU and thanks for the other design I will be probably be building that now!

Hi
A local Oz manufacturer produces 1KVA toroidals only 65H x 165D. These are based on Antrim Transformers (N.I.) technology and mey be available from agencies throughout the UK. Have you checked them out? In any case, what problem might you forsee in a single 800VA trafo?

Unless you are planning on really irritating the neighbours or sustained load testing for fun, it seems a bit of overkill for domestic use.

Yes well I thought about that and I can get 800VA ones that will fit and I won't be driving low imepedence loads so the current won't be needed as much. But from what I read on that thread the larger the better for the quality?

Because you read things on the INTERNET, it is not necessarily true. Unfortunately many people consider the INTERNET their text book/bible and learn a load of rubbish.

Why would you want to use a bigger power supply than is necessary, you think that you will get something magic from it?
