It must be expensive to create mosfet in SiC, and where they will be placed?
IGBT has already low enough drop voltages for 1KV and more with less than 2V Vce drop. In low voltage, Hexfets are cheapest and rugged technology also very low Rds on and also fast, 5MHz reached for 100W RF classE amplifier with IRF540 and 50MHz 2W with IRF510. In audio, Lateral are the most linear and no thermal drift. For low power, there are many other like SOI devices.

Was it Mark Shepherd who postulated that every time the cumulative volume of a product doubles the price falls by half.

Looks to me that the Cree guy is engaging in a little doublethink in avoiding a direct answer to a question on the pricing curve. MOSFETs benefitted from being multiple sourced if my memory serves correctly, so the market ensured their competitive prices.

With the due respect, I would say it was more or less the same for the first HexFets some decades ago (I will have to double check that).
What I still can't get is how you can do the magic to make this switching intended devices into a beautiful linear circuit.

Yes, It will not competitive in price.
If they really will sell it for $10 when they produce 10x of recently produced. May that is somewhat competitive to IGBT that around $2-$4 at the same rating.
I don't know how they implant the dopant to that thing. SiC is a solid rock, not a crisp wafer anyway.
If they sell it for $10, still I like to use IGBT for its 1/4 price, because I don't like to switch 1KV at very high freq, many other things there.

effebi
NP already does that in his commercial products ;

not mentioning fact that most of HexFets are intended for switching circs
