Default RCA STAV-3990 Relay Buzing

I have had the RCA STAV-3990 for sevral years and in the last year it has started buzzing .. the buzing is coming from the reciver ( relays I think ) not through the speakers ... It does not buzz all the time .. this makes it verry hard to track it down ... It starts buzzing and by the time i get to the reciever the buzzing stops. any thoughts on how to fix this?

If the buzzing is a low frequency hum (about 60Hz), it is more likely that this is from the power transformer resonating due to: i)the frequency of the mains ii)the flimsiness of the bottom panel or the mounting screws being loose. Both of these cause the transformer and the bottom panel to resonate at an audible frequency. As the transformer heats up or as the current draw lessens, the transformer stops resonating and the buzzing stops.

To fix this you may want to try and re-tighten the mounting screws for the transformer (usually 4 in each corner of the metal frame it is in) or loosen them off, jiggle the transformer around a bit so it is in a slightly different position and re-secure it.

The best way I can think to discribe the sound is the sound of an electric shaver

Harmonics on the mains is common problem,
Toroid ~ grill interaction

If it really is a relay that buzzes (Relay run on AC?) then this was similar,

Ok .. If I keep messing with this I might just get it fixed .. if i loosen the powersuply and turn the power on and off the buzz is almost gone . so it looks like it is the power supply

I think you will find it's down to the purity of the mains. Did you read this from the link in post #5 Although this mention toroids it applies equally to all constructions.
