I have a Revox B750 that did the same thing. There is a time delay circuit that activates a relay and it is supposed to disconnect the speakers from the amplifier when you switch on or off. This circuit malfunctioned and didn't disconnect. The amplifier would give big pops and moans at turn on or off. Look for something similar.

Had something similar with a pair of Audiolab Poweramps - turned out to be the protection relays, you could hear them click after approx 5-10secs when switched on but immediately after the Amps were switched on an audible 'crack' was heard through the speakers. Although the relays were energising the contacts were already made (plastic inside relay was broken causing relay contacts to be permanently made) Also another relay in the other poweramp had dirty contacts which caused the mid/bass unit to crackle/cut out at low volumes.

Cheers
