Greetings,
I am new to this site but have read things here for a while. I have two SWTPC Universal tigers that my Brother and I built in the very early seventies. These ARE NOT the same circuit as the magazine article. These are not the Tiger .01B etc.. They were called the Universal Tiger by SWTPC but differed from the magazine version. These used 2N5210 as the differential stage and preamp and these also had two SS11XX series devices as well the 40409 and 40410 and the MJ802 and MJ4502. The distortion pot is not on this version mounted on the heat sink and support separately but is a trimpot on the board. These kits came that way from SWTPC and this is not a modification. We have since lost the documentation thus the schematic. Age has taken it's toll and I want to get them back up and running. If anyone has the schematic for this particular version I would greatly appreciate it. This version was substantially improved over the original and I know that because we also built two of the original as in the PS article and these were always superior and had less distortion. Please do not refer me to the original schematic as I not only have found it several places but i also have the PE magazine since we subscribed to the magazine when the amp article appeared. Thanks for your time, Phil |

If they were built on the open frame chassis, then they were probably the MK-II as advertised here,
note the mention of "volt-amp limiting": http://www.swtpc.com/mholley/Catalog1973b/Page4.jpg I don't have the schematic currently scanned, not sure if I have it at all. |

The limiter portion of the schematic would be essentially the same as the .01, the limiter transistor base fed from the .1 emitter resistor on the output, the collector of the limiter transistor to the base of the output, the emitter of the limiter transistor to the rail.

You might want to search here, there have been a few rather exhaustive discussions on the amp and variants, along with some suggestions to make them bullet proof...
