What does the chunk between the source and C6 do other than introducing noise and distortion?

Yes, if you want to add noise and distortion there are cheaper ways of doing it. Silicon diodes can add distortion and zener diodes can add noise. Although I actually like well-designed valve amplifiers, I deplore the modern fashion of adding random valves to SS circuits in order to add "tube sound".
