I have a pair of "high end" mono block solid state amps of modern design (about $3000 for the pair). Today, system did not sound right. One is clearly bad. If I put my ear to the speaker it feeds (which is proven good, by the way, its a Thiel), I can barely hear the sound, but it is there. Are we talking about bad relays here? The amp is in warranty, but I will probably have to wait several months for service. Should I just go ahead and replace with good quality relays? What would those be?

Replacing parts without understanding why they are being replaced or even if it needs replacing is bad mojo. Relays are very robust parts and in many amps they might even be the most reliable part on the whole chassis.
If your relay is part of a speaker protection scheme, chances are good that it is simply doing as it is being told. In that case, it must be determined if the amp output is bad (excessive DC), or if the protection circuit is bOrked. |
