20 Watt Class A amplifier

I found a schematic of this easy to build Class A amp that would be great for a beginner

Based on John Linsley Hood's 34 years old project, modified probably by Rod Elliott. Not so bad (and not excellent), for the real beginners you will find more suitable schematics with similar or better parameters and sonic results.

Yes, the Death of Zen. Aspiring builders should note that you need big heatsinks for this one, and there is an update to regulate the voltage on the first trimpot.

Lang 20W MOSFET

The Lang 20W MOSFET Class A amp is an alternative (The Audio Amateur 2/86). Perhaps a bit coplicated for a complete beginner, it does have a PCB layout, though I don't know whether boards are still available, and a component stuffing plan.

It has paralleled MOSFET output, so if 20W is too much, you could omit one pair of the output FETs, and reduce the size of the transformer (reduce your electricity bill, too).

The circuit is in 'The Audio Amateur Power Amp Projects' - I don't have a copy of this book.

Perhaps it would be more aptly named "The Resurrection of Hood"
;)
