Default Polystrene or bust?

Fealing being born in the wrong century is what I have become to acquaint to finding a good source of “Polystyrene caps”. On a quest from the great beyond to achieve a sound that one can only seem to find in a particular type or grade of component has been the “Holy Grail” of Audio. I have found sources only to call and hear that they “No longer carry them” or “They were never a big seller”. The Polystyrene caps I can find are not at the tolerance that I need as 1% seems not to be very popular. So this dose not sound like a rant and rage over the quest, the point is “what is the general option on the best substitute for Polystyrene”.

LCR in england makes polystyrene caps to 1% tolerance. The best replacement caps i found have a PPS dielectric. They are made by Rifa and Wima. I slightly prefer the SMD parts. A good substitute is Vishey-Röderstein MKP 1837. They come in 1% tolerance and i find the sound neutral. They recently introduced a KP range with film and foil that should be even better in the extreme treble but only very small values are availlable.

Put "polystyrene" in the Mouser search engine -- if you need values matched to 1% just buy 10 of them. There are several surplus outfits with stock as well.

The values I need are 680pf and 1000pf @1% and 63v~200v. I seen the listing your speaking of but do not realy want to order out of the US if I can help it. Mouser has no 1% values and no one is stocking these anymore that I have found at leat not what I'm looking for. I also do not want to order from some one's junk-o-box surplus ebay sale. I will check into the Vishay part numbers that looks good. The seach continues...

Just checked the Vishay MKP as Joachim recommended but they do not offer the values in that range. The site in Australia dose not have those values either. I ordered five of each, WIMA FKP2 680p & 1000p@100v/2.5% Polypropylene off of Ebay tonight. I just really had my mind set on the Polystyrene caps. I still have not given up yet.

Youre right about the polystyrene caps, they are my preffered caps, I stockpiled them when I saw what was coming, the best ones Ive ever used were the philips 1 percent precision types of the 80s and 90s, they were excellent.

Have a look at this site, I think they have what youre after AMERICAN CAPACITOR CORPORATION - Capacitors proudly made in the United States of America

You probably mean RTE, RTX doesn't come in that range.

(RTX are offered by vendors such as Handmade electronics, no longer by Parts Connexion)

For the 680pF/1% => http://www.hndme.com/productcart/pc/...idCategory=136
