Autoformers are variations on the transformer theme wherein the primary and secondary are, in fact, the same winding. (Variacs are generally autoformers...) Yes, they can be used for impedance matching, however, they suffer from pretty much the same ills as conventional transformers: capacitance, hysteresis, frequency limitations, etc.
