Please Help ID this... Diode?

3 Attachment(s)
This red device (diode?) has a burnt area all around it. I assume the cap is bad along with a burnt resistor.

Is this a zenier diode? I do not have a schematic, however the back side of the board has the diode symbol and a long "Z" or "N" in front of it. I copied the markings off of the back of the board- they are on the pix, because they are hard to see through the burn marks. (see pix).

If it is a diode, what size would I replace it with???

Any help would be appreciated.

Hard to tell. A zener is usually drawn like this
From the looks it reminds me of an old 1N4148.
Could you reverse engineer that small part of the circuit?

I just paid $5.00 for a junk schematic! Problem still not solved. Thanks for the input Netlist.

hello.
yes,looks like a (z)diode.........
have you tried to measure it (with a dmm)?

It looks like it got quite hot. I don't know if it would work???

The amp doesn't work, so I'm assuming that it is the faulty part. I got a junk schematic, maybe I'll chance it and replace it w/ a zenier?

z diodes often run hot a little bit in operation.........
can you measure the voltage drop of this part?

jmlandry 2nd June 2010 11:43 PM

Yup,

I get .665 one way and open the other way. Holy diodes batman! I guess that it is working. The resistor near it is shot and maybe the cap is bad, the cause of the strife.

I'm a parts changer, not a wiz.

.........yes,looks like it is not burnt' through...........

..........yes......sometimes we have here "holy arnold (schwarzenegger)" but doesn't help in electronics..............
good night.....1 am.............
