QUASI Amplifier for Beginners

if power is not important then why call this a 550W amplifier?

Why do you show a 4pair output stage?

Why do you show +-65Vdc as the supply?

I would suggest a beginners amplifier should start with PSU <=+-50Vdc, 1pr output stage and specified for the real power into 8r0., not this monster of 550W. That is approaching what CAR Audio can only think about - POWER is all!

Stage 2 is the option to add a second pair to improve the current capability of the amplifier.
Crown XLS-602 with 4pair MJ15024/MJ15025 have 2x650W/4R and 2x980W/2R useing 1kW toroidal transformer.
This amplifier can have 550W/4R with 4pair MJ15024, and pcb is for 4pair outputs with +/-65V.
I also suggest a begginers to start with single pair.

Regards Apex , just some small Question 1- Apart from changing of 2n5551 and 15032 & 15033 can i exceed rail voltage up to 70-0 -70 and use more pairs of 2n 3773 to use with 4 ohm load . I have felt with my earlier amplifiers that increasing pairs of output transistors , current of transformer and M.F.D. of capacitors Specially computer grade condensers which are bigger in size and surge current gives the Advantage of stability and same output voltage with less r load. Thanking and in hope to get your valuable suggestions. VedmitraSharma from city of Tajmahal.

With this change you can use 80V-0-80V DC rail voltage and 6 pairs of 2N3773, but this amp have no VI limiter, and must be upgrade step by step when you have more expirience in diy, and learn more about amps circuits.

Thanks again Mr. Apex as I do,nt know real name .Question again will there be any changes in resistance values for 80-0-80 version. can it deliever enough power to drive 2 15" 300 watts speakers in folded horn cabinet.please help me as I am designing P.C.B. for 8 pair 37773 version. thanking Vedmitra sharma.

Instead 22k use 2x15k in series (30k), and you can drive 2x15",

Have you considered using one amplifier to drive one speaker?
The twin driver horn then would need two lower power amplifiers.

Even better two single driver horns each with their own amplifier stacked side by side.

BTW,
the 2n3773 is one of the very few Power transistors to guarantee 1.5A @ 100Vce and to have it's maximum rated 150W at it's maximum rated 140Vce limit. But, that same limit cannot allow sufficient reliability on +-80Vdc supply rails.

You are right, with +/-80V DC MJ15024 must be used instead 2N3773.

the MJ15023/4 cannot match the SOA of the 3773 at 100Vce (100W) nor 140Vce (50W). The 3773 (150W at both 100Vce and 140Vce) is a mighty transistor considering how old the technology must be.
I would instead ensure the supply rails never exceeded +-70Vdc to allow the 3773 to operate reliably. Or use the MJ21193/4 which can improve on the 3773 significantly.

You are right again, at the end useing +/-65V with 2N3773 (post #1) is best solution.

Just a quasi version of a Crown MA5000vz.
Hi djk,

Since Crown switches the supplies in parallel or series fashion in accordance with audio signal amplitude[Class-H] which is quite complex for diyers here.

One can make a very simple input diamond differential based balanced bridge class-G with one side of output grounded using simple step derived from both outputs in OR topology.

Frontend powered by +/-15VDC and coupled with floating output stage thru folded current mirrors.:)

"Since Crown switches the supplies in parallel or series fashion in accordance with audio signal amplitude[Class-H] which is quite complex for diyers here."

Two diodes and a big FET for the switch.

The switch is driven by a handful of comparators (LM393, 339) and a timer, and it is a bit complex.

One could just build a pair of amplifier with a single ended (one side hooked to ground) supply. A pair of low-current ORing diodes on the two amplifier hot outputs could then feed your level-shift diode and either your class G stage, or your class H comparator and switch.
