Default Proton D940 Help

I have an old Proton D940 that Ive had for about 5 years.
When it is switched on the vfd/led? tuner display will fade out and the right speaker will cut out, over about 5-10 seconds the display slowly gets brighter then the right channel cuts in again then it cuts out and the display dims, it does this 2 -3 times then its fine until its been turned off over night and it repeats itself the next time I use it.
I have also noticed that at low volumes the right channel is quieter than than the left. I realise this amp is about 25 years old but I really enjoy listening to it and would like to try and fix it. is it true capacitors should be replaced in old amps?
Cheers
