Actually, it is possible - using +-50V power supplies and bridge mode. Such an amp could provide about 90V peak into an 8-ohm load, equivalent to about 500W RMS.
It would, however, need many devices in parallel to satisfy SOA and cooling requirements, and of course, the output stage would never work truly optimized due to integrated resistors in the darlington package. If it was a pure 8 ohm resistive load and the supplies were limited to provide 80V peak into it, and they were cooled to sub-zero temperatures, then maybe 2 pairs could actually produce 400W RMS :P Last edited by ilimzn; 17th March 2010 at 12:05 PM. |
