Class A electronics ban?? fact or fiction

oh,

We are really starting with with the technology as we defragment digital to reach recognizeable analogue state with it... As a light designer, artist (digital and analogue-oil and stuff ;)), and fellow music lover and DIYer I found some relation between hi-fi and light source industry. While I wanted to leave A class amplifiers because I wanted something more efficent and running cooler in summer I searched for the amp to satisfied my needs in music (and went through kits of switch amps, AB class amps, chip amps etc...). And I always missed something I had with my old A class amp (same speaker, same source...). In between I stared to learn more and more about the light design and started to work for a company. I after a year there I wanted to make a to us known as a "blind" test for amps, speakers etc.., but in this case would be more of a "semi blind" test as just the light source were covered. It was my beautiful new kitchen that it was our playgrounnd for a test. We tested some dozen light sources (CFL, T5, T8, LED reflectors and LED bulbs, incanescent-ordinary bulb, halogen bulbs (12V and 220V), halogen spots, metalhalogen 20W, circular fluorescent, CFL reflectors and CFL in all kind of forms). Light source was covered with a screen and nobody could see it. I must say I was dissapointed as I relly WISHED that (as in amp story) a energy efficient source win...but...the winner was ordinary 100W bulb. The closest was a halogen IRC QR111 reflector... I tried to find reasons for this and while like in audio industry you can make a decent a class amp with very good sound and musical "spirit" in it with very few parts (specially a valve amp) and make it somewhat very analogue sounding, same goes IMHO with incandescent bulbs. They are glowing wire, they are closest to sun with their nature. The rendering factor the industry hangs on for claiming good "spirited" CFLs and LEDs is just a fluke. It is like measurements we make while building and testing amps. It tells just a part of the story. To an analogue source, like glowing wire which is fire itself a Light Emitting Diode is just a small brother which is trying to reach the same status. colour rendering index is a part measurement. It is measuremet taken in some parts of the spectrum, but just halogen and incendescent bulbs are full, uncut in that spectrum other sources have high peaks and big deeps. It is like distortion measurement of and low and high NFB amp or a smooth speaker driver compared to and...let say a Lowther driver. But unfortunately colorations or better to say a miss of it is not welcomed in lighting a painting or your in-the-daylight-beautiful-home. Sun brings the truth back so as live unamplified concerts do. I could go on and on, Ok I did, but, oh you know what I wanted to say, right?...

regards T.

Several of the CFLs I have purchased recently 'turn on' at an intensity only a quarter or less of their rated value and take several minutes to reach full brightness. Needless to say, this is not satisfactory operation.

Most CFLs are OK on startup when new. The difference between good ones and bad ones becomes noticeable after a few months of regular use. I've found a brand that performs well in this respect:

Ecobulb | Lessening climate change through economical energy savings!

I went through several different brands before settling on these. Some of the others started to go dim on startup after only a couple of months, or failed outright within 6 months. I've been using these for albout 2 years now and the earliest ones are only now starting to be dim on startup.

I think LED lights are potentially a good idea if and when they ever get the cost reasonable, but the two I bought as test lights (for low stress, very low duty cycle closet lighting) failed in fairly short order (within a couple of years), both because of random solder joint failures which caused all the seriesed LEDs to stop lighting in classic 'christmas tree light' fashion.

I think that it was a big mistake of the entire world not to support socialism in Western Block so it could stay being isolated there. People who lived there most probably had Karma to live in Socialist society. Now, when Iron Curtain is broken, and no more USSR and Eastern Block exist, Karma follows former habitats of Socialist countries, wherever they live now. California accepted a lot of engineers and scientists from Russia and other ex-socialist countries, so more and more laws and regulations in California resemble USSR laws. Wait until private business will be outlawed because capitalists exploit labor without direct control of society, and can break the law potentially in order to get profit.

Speaking of efficiency of consumer electronics, I have some radiators at home to heat rooms during cold winter nights. They have some electronic thermostats inside. That devices consume more energy than class A amps, but SPL is very low. That's why I prefer them, because they are quiet, unlike central natural gas heater! That means, ratio between energy consumption and output SPL is much higher than in any functioning class A audio amplifiers... May I still use them?!

Also, I have a combined device: radio, alarm clock, calculator, night lamp. Why I can't use a combined room heater & an amp?! Why the heck some collectivity is going to decide may I use combined audio & heating device, or not?! Is Socialism officially declared in our countries, or not yet?!

From former USSR to unemployements rate in California ,then
to Capitalism and last ,but not least ,Class A amps , to end with
Socialism as a curse...

Who said that politics is irrelevant to electronic engineering ?..

I guess that i understand why the US industry is in decline..

Actually electric bar heaters ought to be banned ;) Semiconductor heating is vastly more efficient as there is no other output than infra red heat (from the heatsinks), unlike an electric bar heater that actually puts out some light :D

Musical fires anyone?, the chairs are occupied rofl.gif

I think it has to do with the larger bandwidth of light produced by incandescence bulbs compared to fluorescent. Funny, the light bulb similar to the one first designed by Edison is still the best. Go figure. I despise governments creating laws dictating we must buy those efficient bulbs that do in fact contain toxic materials that will in fact end up in your water supply eventually, in order to prop up certain industrial companies that contribute to their coffers. Bribery and politics......don't tell me there is a difference....I'm not that blind.:bfold:

As for the wasted energy, if folks reduced (increase in summer) the thermostat in their homes by a couple of degrees, the wasted energy from incandescent light bulbs would be all but negligent. As Bonsai pointed out, power transmission inefficiencies are quite significant. You never here this pointed out by those who tout those efficiency bulbs.:whazzat:

I find this quite naieve. Have you actually lived in another country to see for yourself, or do you just follow the US media?

Hmmmm, well I would consider Fox News, for the most part, more center or center left. They still run the same stories using the same language and even the same specific words as the other network talking heads. There are some popular media outlets, not mainstream though, that I would consider on the right but I doubt you've heard of them. And I'm not referring to Rush the Golfer. Most media in the US is affiliated with the same corporations as the mainstream so you still really get mass produced cheap white bread-like opinions. Very few are actually independently syndicated.

A halogen lamp runs with a hotter filament than an 'ordinary' bulb. I wonder if they'd look nicer if you ran them at say 75% of rated voltage to cool them down.

I suspect this will shorten their life - there is some complex chemistry/physics involving a reaction between the evaporated filament, the iodine, and the glass at a particular temperature. But I've never tested it.
