Default NAD C320 listening impressions/repair procedure

C320 comes in to the shop for repair ... a classic case with a gone trafo so trafo was replaced after my estimation that the original trafo was no more of 100W we made a costum trafo that was higher than the original and bit wider that bearly fitted in the case but totaly the trafo was almost twice in wattage than the original

beyond that the machine was in excelent condition except e few electrolytics that needed to be replaced arround the protection IC and secondary power supply bit of spray in one switch and one pot and other than the above nothing else

introduced also some drilling in the pcb as ventillation holes arround the secondary power supply ( it seemed to me that temperatures there are marginal )

tuning was with in specs though multiturns where installed and after that idle and offset was by the book

regarding other other capacitors they all seemed to be fine so i didnt bother to check more than 10 so my estimation was complete

now listening to the machine was kinda strange the first idea i got that the sound comes out of it is very comercial and has almost a U shape curve , short of a constand contour or loudnes existing there all the time

either there some emphasis on the sides low and high or some kind of de emphasis in the midle...of course all the midle is there but its someway in the back

regarding high it seems that there is a hole from 3.5K to 6 k but the rest of the high above 6K remains krisp and clean

bass is tight and plenty .... more than its supposed to be, that is an impression that is probably created from the "lack " of midle

therefor i could go ahead and seperate pre and main to understand where this is coming from either pre or main but it was too time consuming to bother

generally i dont like NAd equipment its too complicated for no reason

one of the things i liked very much was that stereo image and chanel seperation was very good and probably coming from the very well designed input selector

kind regards sakis
