Default What to wrap a DIY power toroidal transformer with?

Hi folks,

I am thinking of rewinding the power transformer in my REL Stampede subwoofer in order to change it from 230V-only to dual-primaries. Can someone who's made their own mains toroids suggest what I should use to rewrap the transformer once I'm done rewinding it. I.e. what can I use to replace the plastic (tape?) cover that I'm going to have to cut off?

Thanks,
Paul

PTFE tape as used by plumbers should work well.
The stuff that toroids usually use is Melinex tape.

If you can find the centre of the primary winding you can break it and form 2x115V primaries. The only problem is you will have to totally unwind the secondaries. If you are unlucky, the tape insulating the primaries will be so well adhered that you will be unable to get it off without damaging the primary.

My suggestion from the other thread is a much better idea - buy a suitable transformer with 2x115 windings, and create the low power supplies using 20V zeners driving transistors, from the main rails.
