Essentially I want a circuit that can transform my passive pickups to actives. I have searched around on google a bit, and found one circuit that uses a single FET. It looks good, but I want to know what other folks have tried. I am trying to get extremely high gain output, for playing metal, etc. Essentially what I want is something like the EMG afterburner, but I want to be able to customize it and of course have the fun of building it myself.
Any ideas? Has anyone done something similar? |

I use a Zoom 707 effects pedal for my sounds. It was about £150 but worth every penny for the massive amount of different sounds it can create. If you just want valve type overdrive metal sound then a soft limiter is a good circuit. Or just buy in one of the many valve type distortion boxes.

I want something that converts my passive pickups to actives. Thus, it should fit neatly inside my guitar. I am looking for the preamp schematic that EMG uses, but something similar would be great.
Thanks! |

Thank you all! Extremely helpful.
I am going to attempt to build this: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t9095/ and wire it up to my EMG HZ (passive) to attempt to get the EMG 81 sound. I realize that the EMG 81s are wound with thicker wire and less turns, so they get lower noise, but I am going to see what happens. Perhaps a boss ns2 will cut down the noise. I might also attempt to build this: http://www.angelfire.com/az3/dimitri/images/ea0594.pdf And I will read through this thread and pull any useful info out: Discrete guitar preamp I will report back on my progress. Cheers! |
