I have a 10k ALPS RK097 (the little green one) on my preamp, and It doesn't really do much. It certainly doesn't stop the sound when it's turned all the way down.
Is that because its only 10k? Should I get something like a 50k? Thanks. |

Sounds more like a wrong connection. If you look at the potentiometer from the front (knob) the left pin goes to ground, the right to the RCA connector and the center pin to the amplifier's input.
If that does not cure the fault, post a schematic of your amplifier.

you may have it wired as a variable resistor rather than a volume control (attenuator).

Center tap shunts input. 2 wires need to be resoldered.
