That link is definitely the best explanation you'lre likely to find on the www, but the short answer is that "any benefits" is a big understatement; active crossovers are a fundamental part of the architecture of probably 99% of bi/tri-amped setups!

Almost all active crossovers for domestic hi-fi suit this situation because that's exactly what they are designed for. You make your choice based on the numbers of drivers in your speakers and how many amps will run them, what frequencies you want to cross at, what order and shape the crossover slope is, etc.

A personal favourite is the 4th order linkwitz-riley, which gives you nice steep rolloffs and excellent summing characteristics.
